A small country, full of birds

Nepal sits where three worlds of birds meet: the Indian lowlands to the south, the Himalaya through the middle and the Tibetan plateau beyond. In a few days you can climb from hot sal forest, through misty oak and rhododendron, to alpine ridges under the highest mountains on Earth.

Every band of altitude has its own birds: hornbills in Chitwan, laughingthrushes in the hills, monals up high. Some stay all year and others fly in for the winter or the spring, so there is always something new.

  • 902kinds of birds, about 9% of all the birds in the world
  • 8,849 mfrom lowland forest at 60 m to the top of Everest
  • 1bird found nowhere else on Earth: the Spiny Babbler, in the scrub around Kathmandu

Curious where to start? I've written up the places I go back to most, the birds you'll meet in each and the best months to come.

Where to go, and when

Our birding tours & services

  • A small group of birders on a red dirt trail, binoculars raised towards the trees

    Led birding tours

Multi-day trips that I lead from the first morning to the last, planned around the birds and the season. We walk at a birder's pace, start at first light, and go where the birds are that month: the Annapurna forests, the grasslands of Chitwan, the hills above Kathmandu.

    Day tours

Only have one day? I'll pick you up before dawn and we'll spend it in the forests around the Kathmandu Valley, or in Chitwan or Bardia if you're already there. Easy walking, a packed lunch, and more birds than you would ever guess.

  • Trekkers on a rocky ledge below snow-capped Himalayan peaks under a blue sky

    Birding specialist on treks

Already planning a trek? I can join your group as the birding and nature specialist while your trek guide looks after the logistics. Same mountains, same trail, and someone beside you who knows every call in the forest.

What our travellers say

  • We went in March, and Krishna took us out to Kasara before sunrise to wait in the grass for a Bengal Florican display. When the male leapt into the air I could hardly believe it. Bis Hazari Tal on the last morning, with jacanas on the lily pads, was a lovely way to finish. Placeholder review.

On the Kathmandu Birding Day: Phulchowki & Godawari

After a few days of temples and traffic, a day on Phulchowki was exactly what we needed. Krishna found Mrs. Gould's Sunbird feeding in a rhododendron and a Spotted Forktail at the stream. We saw so many birds in a single day. Placeholder review.

  • Placeholder Guest C, United Kingdom

On the Chitwan Jungle Birding and Wildlife Safari

The canoe ride at dawn was the highlight for me, with Gharials on the sandbars, kingfishers everywhere and a rhinoceros feeding on the far bank. Krishna's eye for birds is incredible, and he made the Great Hornbill in the forest feel like a gift. Our lodge was comfortable and the walks were relaxed. Placeholder review.

On the Annapurna Sanctuary Birding Trek

I have been trekking for years, but never with a birder alongside. At Bamboo, Krishna waited patiently while a Great Parrotbill finally came out into the open, and at Annapurna Base Camp we watched Snow Pigeons wheel in front of the south face at dawn. A Brown Dipper at Jhinu Danda was the sweet end to a wonderful trek. Placeholder review.

  • We were lucky with a clear November day. A Himalayan Bluetail showed beautifully near the top, Himalayan Griffons soared past the summit, and Krishna pointed out the Langtang range on the horizon. Gentle, informative and a lot of fun. Placeholder review.

On the Annapurna Sanctuary Birding Trek

We came for the mountains and left talking about birds. Krishna heard a Himalayan Monal before we had even finished our tea at Tadapani, and then found us a Kalij Pheasant walking across the clearing. The rhododendrons were in full bloom and the Fire-tailed Sunbirds were right in them. The pace was perfect, and we never felt rushed. Placeholder review.
