Along the way

  1. Thatched village houses below forested hills under a pastel sunset sky

    Early years

    Birds in the margins

I grew up in the hills, drawing the birds outside our house in the margins of my school books, long before I knew their names. Then someone lent me a pair of binoculars, and every call had a face.

  2. Birders with cameras and backpacks wading up a shallow river through green forest

    My first guests

I led my first birding group through the forests of Chitwan. Watching someone see a bird for the very first time was even better than seeing it myself.

  3. A red panda resting on a mossy branch in dark forest

    Painting what we saw

In the quiet monsoon months I painted the birds and animals from our days in the field, and showed the paintings for the first time. The red panda was the one everyone stopped at.

  4. A Kalij Pheasant, blue-black with a red face, walking over dry leaf litter

    Teaching young artists

I started drawing workshops for young artists in Kathmandu: first how to watch a bird closely, then how to put it on paper.

  5. Trekkers standing on rocks in front of snow-covered Himalayan peaks under a clear blue sky

    Today

    Anywhere in Nepal

These days I guide birders, photographers and trekking groups from the Terai grasslands to the high Himalaya, in every season. Binoculars, camera and sketchbook always come along.
